HOW DO WE GLORIFY GOD?

Once a Christian leader was very sick and not expected to live. Alone with the Lord, He cried, "What should I do, Lord?" God spoke to his spirit: "The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." The man, the director of a large Christian organization, realized that he would not have said it that way. He would have said, "The chief end of man is to glorify God and serve Him forever." But God is not satisfied with service; He wants us to enjoy Him.

TO ENJOY

The Lord allowed the man to recover from his illness, and he now lives with a different purpose. He lives to enjoy His Lord.

So how do we glorify God?


 WITH JOY

 Rachel Barkey said: "A few years ago, I was struggling with the daily grind of constantly cleaning and tidying, laundry (which I detest), trying to meet project deadlines, cooking meals and washing dishes, replying to work emails, refereeing disagreements with the kids, homeschooling, only to turn around the next day or even the next moment to have to do it all over again. I thought, Is this it? Is this all that I'm supposed to be doing?" Then she came across a blog of someone who put it so succinctly: "I am here to serve with joy." Rachel said, "I was serving--just like Jesus, but I wasn't doing it with joy. Big difference. I have many roles, but in all of these I have one purpose--to be like Jesus, to serve with joy."

 Life is filled with meaning when our chief purpose is to give God glory by enjoying Him.
Delight yourself also in the LORD: and he shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
John Piper said: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. So, dear Jesus, my purpose for this day is to enjoy You.

    I find that
    all of my "doings" take on a brighter, more cheerful look when I do everything for the glory of God with joy! When I do each mundane duty as though I was doing it for Jesus with joy makes the whole atmosphere cheerful. Gladly, with joy will I do it for Jesus!

    Here are a few thoughts by John Newton....

    Religion is not to be confined to devotional exercises--but rather consists in doing all that we are called to do, with a single eye to His glory and will, from a grateful sense of His love and mercy to us. This is the chemistry which turns every mundane thing into gold, and stamps a value upon common actions!

    When a mother is making or mending the children's clothes, or teaching them, or cleaning the kitchen, or a saucepan--she may be as well employed, as when she is upon her knees or at the Lord's Table.

    It is an great mistake to think that all time is lost--which is not spent in bible-reading, or hearing sermons, or prayer.
    These are properly called means of grace--and should be attended to in their proper season.
    But the fruits of grace--are to appear in our common daily course of conduct.

    It would be wrong for a mother to neglect the house of God--and it would be equally wrong to neglect the prudent management of her own house. It is chiefly as a wife and mother of a family, that she can let her light shine to His praise. I would not have her think that she could serve the Lord better in any other station, than in that in which God in His providence has placed her.

    A simple desire to please God, to walk by the rule of His Word, and to do all to His glory . . .
    like the fabled magic stone, turns all to gold,
    consecrates the actions of common life, and
    makes everything that belongs to our situation and duty in domestic life, a part of our religion.
    "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do--do all to the glory of God!" 1 Corinthians 10:31

    Hi Ariella! Thanks so much for stopping at my blog. I've been blessed on this return visit. It's such a good reminder to serve with joy. I know I can fall into that rut of serving, but it is so much better for all to serve with a smile! And I love the story about enjoying our Lord.
    I must also tell you that I live in Michigan, in an area with lots of people whose family came from the Netherlands. There are many towns near me that are named after areas there (with American spelling)- Zeeland, Vriesland, Holland, Drenthe, Zutphen, Overiesel... My great, great grands all came from the Friesland area!
